abstract = "Riparian forests can be connecting corridors between fragments and
protected areas, playing a key role in maintaining water quality
and biodiversity conservation. However, the increasing use of
areas for agriculture is among one of the major causes of
deforestation in Brazil, having a direct implication on forest
fragmentation and water resources. This study aimed to evaluate
the conflict between land use and land cover in Permanent
Preservation Areas (PPAs) in the municipality of Piedade, SP,
considering a criteria established by the Brazilian legislation In
order to do so, all the PPAs were mapped using the ArcGis software
and overlapped with the land use and the land cover map, obtaining
most of its preserved area represented by native forest (51.60%),
with a predominance of land use by pasture (31.80%), followed by
agricultural crops (11.34%). According to the total area, 21.54%
is represented by APPs, and these showed a considerable percentage
of forest cover (65.84%). The largest areas with inappropriate
land use practices that generated conflict are represented by
pasture (23.81%), followed by agricultural crops (6.68%), which
demonstrates its significant participation in anthropization
processes. The presence of Conservation Units around the study
area emphasizes the importance of PPAs in the formation of
corridors, as well as its importance for water supply to the
                         municipality.",
